Located in Kentucky's largest metropolitan area, the University of Louisville is a state-supported research university that has become known for its focus on teaching, research, service to its community, and the educational advancement of its citizens. The U of L has a long and rich history, with roots dating back to 1798 as the Jefferson Seminary. In 1846, the school was recognized by the Kentucky State Legislature and has been known ever since as the University of Louisville.

With 21,000 students, the University of Louisville is a diverse community with people from all over the country and the world. Accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the University of Louisville is proud to award bachelor, master, specialist, doctoral, and first-professional degrees in more than 170 different programs.

With its main campus located only 3 miles from downtown Louisville, the University of Louisville consists of 3 different campuses;

  • Belknap Campus: Home to 7 of the 11 University colleges and schools.
  • Health Sciences Center: Located in downtown Louisville's medical complex, and home to the University of Louisville Hospital.
  • Shelby Campus: 243-acre campus located in eastern Jefferson county.

With such a large student body, the University of Louisville still maintains a small student to faculty ratio of 19:1. The U of L stays true to its mission of becoming a nationally recognized metropolitan research university. Representing this idea of educational advancement through research is the first full-size bronze cast of the statue, the Thinker, which sits on the steps of U of L's Grawemeyer Hall. Supervised personally by its artist, the French sculptor, Auguste Rodin, the Thinker embodies the spirit of the University of Louisville by pursuing excellence through education and research.
