Opened in 1998, the 91,000 sq ft Papa John's Cardinal Stadium is appropriately shaped like a horseshoe. From its luxurious and private Brown & Williamson Club, there is a spectacular view of Churchill Downs.
Papa John's Cardinal Stadium cost $63 million to complete, and with its modern design and fan-friendly atmosphere, it is also a great place to come for concerts, soccer games, and conventions. The stadium currently has a seating capacity of 42,000, but with an expansion project to be completed for the 2010 season, it will soon be able to house more than 56,000 Card fans. All of the seats at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium are chair-back seats (no bleachers), making the game comfortable for all.
Steeped in tradition, the University of Louisville Cardinals football team exits the Howard Schnellenberger Complex before each game and touches the Johnny Unitas statue before entering the field. After each win, the Cards do a victory lap around the stadium, giving each fan a high-five along the way. The Cardinals have enjoyed a great amount of success in recent years, having won 9 consecutive bowl games, with their last victory at the 2007 Orange Bowl.
Papa John's Cardinal Stadium also features the elegant Brown & Williamson Club, a 550 capacity private venue available for social gatherings, community functions, board meetings, and even wedding receptions. During major events, catering and beverage services are available, with two large bar areas, and you can watch the big game on one of their 18 television screens. Don't forget to peer out of one of their massive picture windows to see the twin spires of nearby Churchill Downs!
